In-Mold Labelling Robots for High-Efficiency Decorated Container Production

In traditional plastic packaging production, decorated containers usually require two separate steps:

  1. Injection moulding the plain container
  2. Post-mould labelling on a separate machine

That second step brings its own machine, operator, floor space, and defect rate—all because the label cannot normally be applied during the moulding cycle. In-mold labeling robots (IML robots) change this model completely.

An IML robot automatically places a pre-printed label inside the open mold before each injection shot. When molten plastic is injected into the cavity, it permanently bonds with the label. The result that comes off the press is a fully decorated container, not a plain one waiting for a separate labelling operation. Because the in-mold label is fused into the container wall instead of stuck on the surface, it cannot peel, bubble, crease, or be removed without damaging the part.

From a production and business perspective, the case for in-mold labelling robot automation is clear:

  • You remove the post-mould labelling machine
  • You reduce labour demand and operator dependency
  • You free up valuable floor space
  • You eliminate the additional reject rate caused by misapplied adhesive labels

At the same time, you upgrade the final product. In Mold Labeling (IML) can cover most or all of the surface with high-resolution, photo-quality graphics. The decoration withstands moisture, refrigeration, and temperature variations that would typically damage conventional labels. Because the label and container can be made from the same polymer, the finished package is recyclable as a single material, with no adhesive to contaminate the recycling stream.

IVIROBOT’s in-mold labelling robots are engineered and configured to match your specific injection press, mold layout, container geometry, and label format.

  • Side-entry IML robots: ideal for maximum throughput on high-cavitation packaging molds where cycle time and productivity are critical.IML ROBOT
  • Top-entry IML robots: suited to more complex container shapes and wider mold variety, offering flexible integration across different tools.

In both configurations, IML robots are designed for precise label placement (within tight positional tolerances) and operate entirely within the existing open-mold window. That means no net increase to your injection moulding cycle time, while delivering consistent, high-quality in-mold labeling on every shot.
